How to give an intramuscular injection to a cat?

Treating a cat is stressful not only for itself, but also for its owner. Especially if the pet needs injections. When it is not possible to take him to the veterinarian every day, and leaving him in the hospital for the duration of treatment is expensive, the owner has to carry out this procedure on his own. The rules are simple, and if you practice a little, the treatment will not cause problems. But do not forget that in any emergency situation, you must immediately contact a specialist. Also, if you need to treat a cat with pills, use pill popper for cats.

Read the instructions

Before starting treatment, you must carefully prepare for it. The shelf life, storage conditions and side effects of the drug should be studied, and if several drugs are prescribed, you must carefully monitor the dosage and duration of the course of each of them. Particular attention should be paid to how the drugs are administered – intramuscularly or subcutaneously. You can write instructions for yourself: the sequence of actions, the name of the medicine and the dosage – you can hang it in a prominent place. It is better not to do anything from memory until you have gained enough experience, since any mistake can lead to serious negative consequences.

Select syringe

If the cat needs to inject a small dose of medication, an insulin syringe can be used to inject, but it is not suitable for an oily medication that can clog a fine needle. If you are injecting with a regular syringe, the needle should be inserted no deeper than 1.5 cm. The syringe can be used only once.

Prepare for the injection

For starters, you can practice on a toy or chicken leg. Immediately before injection, hands should be thoroughly washed, and syringes and ampoules with medicine should be placed in a disinfected container, for example, in a small bowl.

Having typed the necessary drug into the syringe, lift it up with the needle and gently tap on the syringe with your finger so that the remaining air bubbles float up, after which you need to release them by pressing the plunger. If air enters the muscle, a seal may form at the injection site, which will painfully dissolve for several days. The ampoule from under the drug is discarded immediately after use.

Prepare the animal

Before the procedure, the pet must be reassured: pick it up, stroke it. You can treat him with your favorite food before each injection. Many cats tolerate this procedure calmly. But, if the animal is nervous or shy, it must be fixed, for example, by wrapping it with a blanket or using a special retainer bag, otherwise the needle may break during the injection of the medicine and damage the internal tissues.

Inject

If the animal does not have hair on the skin, then the skin must be treated with an alcohol wipe. The needle must be inserted into the muscle sharply and confidently, and the drug, on the contrary, smoothly. The syringe should also be removed with a sharp movement. The pet must be released immediately, but watch him. It is recommended to alternate the injection paws.

If the pet limps a little while the course of treatment is underway, you should not be afraid: this may be due to the action of the drug and will pass after the end of the course of injections. But, if the cat drags its paw, this may be evidence of damage to the nerve endings, and in this case, the animal should be urgently shown to the veterinarian.
